Mother's Journal- Tell Me About Your First Job

When I was 15 my mom came homw from grocery shopping with a Papa Murphy's pizza (Garlic Chicken to be exact). She told me that they were hiring and I should go put in an application. She had even brought one home for me to fill out. This not so subtle hint that I needed to start pulling my own weight frightened me a bit since I had no idea how to even put in an application. Plus, I really did not like that Garlic Chicken pizza.
The next day, after receiving tips from my mom and sister, I walked into the store and asked to speak with the manager. Luckily, Dave (the owner) was there and took my application. I said I would love to be considered for the job. Then I left.
Of course I got called in for an interview since no one can resist my incredible charm (harhar).
It was nerve wracking and exciting, but I must have made an impression because I was basically hired on the spot, even though I wasn't 16 yet. Apparently there is a law that says no one under sixteen can go in a walk-in freezer.
It was a bit challenging at first since it is a very fast-paced work environment. It was fun though and I turned out to be an excellent pizza artist. I had to memorize all the toppings on all the different specialty pizzas. They have stuffed pizzas and calzones that I had to learn how to make and fold the dough just right. After awhile, I was a superstar and really impressed my boss. He said I made the best stuffed pizzas because I had a beautiful way of folding the crust. I still remember that there are 80 slices of pepperoni on a family size Pepperoni pizza. Blech...too much.
I love the smell of Papa Murphy's now because it reminds me of a simpler time, before I became a more responsible, mature adult who works hard. I did not like to work back then. In fact, I think I gave my two weeks notice because of track practice but ended up not even going back in. Such a teenager thing to do.
There was even a time when my sister worked in the co-owned coffee shop that shared the kitchen with Papa Murphy's. That was kinda fun.
