So I saw an article on aol.com about how Rhode Island is taking the word "Christmas" out of the season. So, the Christmas tree is now a Holiday tree. Which is funny because there is no holiday called Holiday. But then again, I am no government official. Their way of thinking is foreign to me.
But I digress. After the initial huff of "Umm, okay why don't they sabotage this sacred holiday a little more and make it more about "them"" (whoever, "them" is) I thought, well you know what...they can take the tree, and they can take Santa, and they can take all the commercialism and make their own holiday...they should name it Holiday.
Give me back Christmas. I get depressed watching Christmas movies, because they are just "Holiday" movies. Children searching for the meaning of Christmas and finding some vague form of it by realizing presents aren't the answer. They never truly get there though. Except in one fantastic (I say, one, but there are probably others, so don't send me hate mail) little animated film called "Charlie Brown's Christmas". I want Atrion to be just like Linus.
Christmas is about Christ. I can celebrate that all year long...yep, even before Thanksgiving GASP!!!!!
We still have a Christmas tree and we still exchange presents. I don't really tell Atrion too much about Santa Clause, because I am not sure how I feel about the old guy in this day and age. But our Christmas goes much deeper than just a "Holiday". It's a time of sacred reflection on our Savior. It's a time to reflect on ourselves just as much. Instead of asking what people got for Christmas, we should ask what they gave. I would want my answer to be that I gave to those in need, I helped the downtrodden, and took from this special day the true meaning of Christmas.
